Early Career Researchers
- Module 1
1. Research associate, individual
Throughout my research, I have worked on documentation, education and community resilience relating to ethnographic music, as is evidenced in my work with the international research project [project name] [supporting publication and link] and the [country name鈥檚] XYZ community [supporting publication and link]. My research on the XYZ music tradition looked at how artists adapted to changes within their music scenes and how music communities around the world could learn from the experiences of others in developing sustainable strategies.
Since 20XX, I have focused on the XYZ folk scene and on the role and representation of XYZ people within this scene. I have worked with XX academics [researcher鈥檚 name] (the PcL on this project) and [researcher鈥檚 name] to develop a community resource to increase access to the XYZ collections at the XYZ Memorial Library [supporting museum link]. I am currently working with [this] Museum on an inventory of recorded XYZ people named in their catalogue, to further help community members who want to access the recordings of their families. In the past year, I have presented two papers on representation of XYZ in the 20th century literature on English folk music, and I am currently working on a co-written article for the XX journal [link and details of accepted publication].
2. Postdoctoral Research Associate, individual
During my PhD, I investigated the environmental services provided by urban nature, focusing on rainfall interception of urban trees. Together with the supervisory team, I planned and designed a research project to investigate the benefits of street trees to stormwater management [city, country]. My research combined different methodologies to understand how the differences in leaf and branch characteristics between common species in [city鈥檚] urban forest could influence their water storage capacity, including the use of remotely sensed data captured through a mobile terrestrial laser scanner. My research results can be used to inform the selection of urban tree species to reduce runoff effects in urban areas. I published this work three international journals [publications and links], and presented my research to diverse audiences at three international conferences.
- Module 2
1. Research associate, individual
I have long-standing working relationships with the XYZ Society and with the XYZ Library. During covid restrictions, I developed a digital strategy for the XYZ Library鈥檚 education department and established a new educational format, called the XXX course, that continued after pandemic restrictions were lifted.
As an educational manager, I have recruited and supported educators and trainees across our many projects for adults, children and disabled young people. I am a trained Arts Award Adviser (Discovery-Silver) and can therefore directly support co-researchers in their portfolio submissions, which forms part of our research method. As committee member of the Participatory Research Network (PRN) at the University of XX, I have actively supported other researchers and students in their research. Based on the Swedish 鈥渇ika鈥 model, I established PRN鈥檚 series of regular cross-faculty meetups to encourage researchers and students to build networks and to share their experiences of participatory research within the university. The meetups have helped to connect participants working in different academic fields with each other, while our conversations contributed to the organisation of the PRN-led workshop, entitled XYZ.
2. Research associate, individual
As a Postdoctoral Research Associate, I have mentored two PhD candidates in my role as a mentor in The University of XX Thesis Mentor programme. This role involved supporting my mentees by regularly meeting with them to discuss the challenges they are facing. As an example, I supported one mentee, who has English as their second language, to overcome a writing block they experienced when thesis writing. In our sessions, we talked about their writing process, when and where they used to write, and explored what they was already doing to address this challenge. Because English is also my second language, I shared with my mentee what had helped me to overcome the same problem, such as [select examples provided]. My mentee found these [approaches] helped them to overcome their writing block.
I have also contributed to the work of my current research team by introducing them to my contacts in [country name], with whom I have established ongoing, collaborative relationships, and by reviewing documents and papers in [language] for the research team.
3. Research associate, individual
I have built and developed effective working relationships with key stakeholders, community organisations, and with co-investigators during my research career. As an example, as a research assistant on a pioneering research project to explore the social, economic and cultural needs of the XYZ community, I facilitated focus groups, trained volunteers in conducting survey research, took part in research meetings with research leaders and members of [town name] council. I also attended a community listening event at XYZ Arena, where I managed an information booth, recruited research participants, and liaised with other researchers and community services.

My work has also involved gathering professional perspectives on urban forestry management and climate change adaptation through a survey and data analyses on urban nature distribution in [international locations] cities.3. Research associate, individual
And as a Research Assistant on the XYZ Postgraduate Community project, which explored marginalised students experiences as post-grad students, I was responsible for recruiting and organising focus groups with female XYZ researchers, and for liaising with the principal investigator. This project led to various outputs, including an article in [publication name], a report to the Students鈥 Union and recommendations to institutional working groups, such as the XYZ survey. I am also a member of the XYZ Association, and have attended and delivered papers as part of a wider academic panel. I have delivered papers in progress as part of a seminar series and have guest lectured to undergraduate and postgraduate students.
- Module 4
1. Research associate, individual
Throughout my career, both inside and outside of academia, I have been concerned with how my work will benefit the stakeholders of whatever area I am working in. Issues around access, inclusion and diversity have been particularly important to me and have encouraged me to develop several projects to bridge academic and non-academic context. For example, the XYZ resource at the XYZ library, aimed at the XYZ communities in England, has been well received by community members and has already been used in educational workshops. During my stint as regional producer (20XX-20XX) for folk and traditional music at [institution name, country], I worked with several music archives, charities and volunteers to make recordings of traditional music accessible online through the project XYZ (20XX-20XX). This project culminated in 60 000 recordings, films and pictures being made freely available online.
During my involvement in the international Knowledge Exchange project [project name, University name and dates], I worked with several organisations in Europe to co-develop a set of best practice guidelines to increase participation and diversity in traditional performing arts.
2. Research associate, individual
During my work for the XYZ project, I engaged with a diverse network of stakeholders. I met regularly with researchers at [institution name] and communicated with project assistants and non-governmental organisations based in [town, country].
As part of my work with another project, XYZ, I collaborated with the local community to assess home gardens, evaluate their diversity and structure, and to understand the potential of home gardens to support nature-based solutions for climate change adaptation, focusing on women鈥檚 food security. Working together with [NGO name] on this project, I supported workshops for women involved in gardening, to understand their challenges and needs to maintain a vegetable garden in informal settlements, and to understand their perceived impacts of climate change. The results of this work were shared with local stakeholders through reports and presentations and was developed into shared knowledge to inform guidelines to improve the benefits of the home gardens for food security of communities living in informal settlements.
3. Research associate, individual
In my current role at the University of XX, I am involved in discussions and in the implementation of methods for the co-production of research within community settings. My work has included XX Forums and the training of community researchers as a way to engage with local communities and to embed skills and learning with community members.
As an example of the community and stakeholder engagement work I鈥檝e undertaken, as a research associate, I managed the XX oral history interview project through collaboration with members of XYZ council, local archivists and web designers. I secured additional funds for a potential website archiving audio, images and text of experiences of first generation XYZ migrants to XX.
